The 1928 Chevrolet National served as a pivotal player in Chevrolets battle against Fords dominance. It showcased that affordability didn’t have to sacrifice quality or safety. Boasting all round brakes, rear view mirrors, petrol gauge and a rear brake light as standard the Chevrolet brand was not taking any chances, offering a $50 discount to better match the bargain basement price of the Ford Model A.
Debuting in January of 1928 Chevrolet launched the National into direct combat with Ford Model A.
The National was offered in 8 different body styles at a moderate price of $495 – $715 US Dollars. At the time, these cars offered a new beauty never before associated with a car priced so low.
The striking new radiator, new longer bonnet and graceful body construction offered a rich substantial beauty and good taste throughout.
The National was only built for one year but outsold the Model A Ford with a total production of 1,193,212 cars produced.
Chevrolet produced ‘knock-down kits’ which were crated and shipped from the United States to overseas General Motors assembly factories in South Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Belgium, Japan, South Africa and Argentina.
Our National was built by Holden of Australia where the car had spent its entire life until imported into the UK in 2000.
At nearly 100 years old the car gives the passenger the sensation of riding high above the road. The interior is cosy, the ride soft and the old car noise reminiscent of true 1920’s motoring.
